New Technology Shopping

Last week was a week of multiple deaths around our home--technology deaths, that is. First it was our flat screen TV. It was probably due, as it was one of the first 42" flat screens that Pioneer made and we brought back with us from Singapore, about 8 years ago. It went quietly in the night. Second to go was my Blackberry. The screen was already having issues, and then the speakers stopped working. I can't answer a phone that I can't hear, so I had to get a replacement. That same day, the flat screen monitor on my desktop computer did not come back after my monthly computer reboot. I am tough on computers. Next, my blue tooth ear piece decided that it could no longer be a part of my Real Estate business. And so it put in for an early retirement. It was a tough week for me and technology!

I thought I would take this opportunity to share with you a few places in Austin where you can shop for good deals on technology when this day comes your way. I trust that your luck is better than mine, and you will not have to replace more than one item at a time, but here is where I would start:
  • Flat screen. The obvious place most of us start are the big retailers such as Best Buy or maybe Walmart for a new TV. These are not bad places to buy new technology, but they are not the only choice either. The less obvious choice that may save you as much as 30% on a great TV is Costco. Membership is as low as about $50 a year, and the flat screen that we bought was 240 MHz (twice the speed of most models on the market today) and hundreds of dollars cheaper than the same manufacturers models at 120 MHz. I never shop at Costco, but thankfully, my wife does. She is so much smarter than me sometimes (maybe all the time). Besides the TV, you may find other things at Costco that save money as well. We bought a new high back office chair while we were there. No a bad deal.
  • Blue tooth ear piece. This is one place where the local stores have pretty high markup on electronics, and I took another play from my wife's play book here--I ordered this online. Amazon.com. This was not top-of-mind for me, but I discovered that I could save a bundle here, over the typical local retailers for cell phone accessories.
  • Flat screen monitor. Many of you know Fry's Electronics. But if you don't knows Fry's, you should get to know it. Fry's is like the super Home Depot of all things electronic. Started in California about 20 years ago, Frys has one of everything under the sun that has to do with high-tech, including computers, widgets, wiring, hard drives, memory, speakers and monitors. They even sell software, movies, phones, and a world of other geek things. If you like Home Depot, you will love Fry's for electronics and related 'stuff'.
So, the next time you are looking for new electronics in Austin, here are some places for you to check out.
